This Is What Dr. Saad Saad Had To Say about Concussion in Children

Dr. Saad Saad was raised in Kuwait and achieved his medical degree from Cairo University in Egypt. Saad went to America after completing his medical internship in England and it is in US that he sorted out his residency in surgery including pediatric surgery thereby becoming a USA board Certified in the same. Dr. Saad has so far discovered two inventions and several surgical procedures for children.

Through his experience as a pediatric surgeon, he has successfully performed numerous complex surgeries on children regardless of their age. Before he retired he was able to attend several medical missions in Jerusalem whereby he performed free surgeries on children who could not afford the complex surgeries.

He retired while he was working at K Hovnanian Children Hospital as a co-medical director and the surgeon-in-chief. Dr. Saad Saad loves providing medical advices especially on issues concerning children, and this is what he had to say about concussion on children.

According to Dr. Saad Saad, concussion occurs when a brain experiences traumatic injury from a blow, jolt or bump on the head. Sometimes when the body of a human is hit, it causes the brain to move suddenly back and forth and this ends up causing the brain to twist, bounce or stretch resulting to an injury.

Saad says that concussion may not be life-threatening but it’s very dangerous as it affects someone’s daily activities. For instance, one can become drowsy, get headaches that won’t go away, have incoherent speech, become numb, restlessness, may faint, and experience repeated convulsions and vomiting among other effects. If a child complains or shows any of these symptoms then it is possible he has concussion especially if they have just experienced a head or body injury. Dr. Saad Saad says that it is your duty as a parent to monitor your child for any chance of concussion immediately after the injury and few hours or days after because concussion can show up instantly or after sometime. ‘In case the concussion signs become worse than expected make sure you take your child to an emergency room,’ says Dr. Saad.

For a child to recover from concussion, it is good that his physical activities are limited for some weeks. Also the child should be encouraged to take more naps and sleep for longer periods. The good thing is that according to Dr. Saad concussion should last for few weeks only.

However, he also says that it is possible in rare cases for it to last longer or reappear during the healing period or after the child resumes to his normal activities, and this include schooling. This is why Dr. Saad Saad says that a parent should closely monitor his child and seek medical attention if things get any worse.
