There are two things I am proud of my life. I am a very proud American. I believe the United States of America is one of the greatest countries in existence.
We fight for people to be able to achieve all that they can in this great country. It is here that you can be a success. It is here that you can achieve your dream. It is here that, no matter your starting station of life or race, you can become whatever you like.
The second thing I am proud of is my religion. I am a very proud seventh day Adventist. While my denomination is not perfect by any means, we do believe in advocating for social justice and social reform.
We firmly believe that God gave us the Sabbath day not only as a day to worship him on, but also as a day to fight for those who are suppressed and being oppressed by tyrannical governments.
I do not know if Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin are Seventh-day Adventists, I doubt that they are, however, I know they are proud Americans who are fighting for immigration reform.
The immigration reform that Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin believe in is a holistic and realistic approach that I believe fully integrates immigrants, no matter what their origin, to the United States. In order to integrate immigrants from United States of America, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin believe that we need to begin by teaching them the English language. Now to be clear here, we are not saying that they lose their entire culture and heritage. We believe they should keep these things. Rather, we want to help them function in the United States of America.
The second step is to begin teaching them skills and strategies that will help them as they get a job here in the states. Thirdly, we gain them employment and work with corporations who are willing to bring immigrants into their workplace.
As Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin have pushed for this ideal, Sheriff Joseph Arpaio has stood to oppose them. He is not wanting to see Hispanics or Latinos being integrated into the United States of America.
He has been responsible for burning homes of Hispanics to the ground, killing Hispanic men in their jail cells, racially profiling Hispanics through his police force, and granting money to these officers were able to send back to Mexico illegal immigrants.
Sheriff Joseph Arpaio tried to silence these two great men by entering into their homes and holding them at gunpoint. Luckily, they did not budge an inch. Rather, they stood up for their rights and countersued the Maricopa County Police Department. The resulting lawsuit was used to start the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund.
